What is a Root Canal?

Root Canal Treatment (Endodontic Therapy) is generally performed instead of an extraction when a tooth has become infected, allowing you to keep hold of your natural tooth for longer. This painless procedure allows the dentist to clean, disinfect and restore the tooth. It is often carried out over 2 visits depending on the severity of the infection.

Purpose

Your dentist will perform the root canal treatment to stop the infection from spreading and will preserve as much of your tooth as possible.

Procedure

We use specific techniques, advanced equipment and local anaesthetic to make treatment comfortable and pain free.

Symptoms

Untreated decay can spread to the nerve inside your tooth causing inflammation, and the infection may spread through the root canal system, leading to abscess or swelling.

Outcome

The aim is to remove all infection from the root canal, so the root is then cleaned, shaped and filled to prevent further infection.

  • A full assessment is provided

  • Treatment is discussed to make sure you are happy

  • A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle

  • At a later visit, the tooth is checked and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled

  • Root treated teeth are brittle and fragile and they may discolour. They may need to be crowned for protection against breaking in the future
