Purpose
A tooth extraction may be necessary for many reasons, including severe damage or decay. One of the most common dental procedures is the extraction of the wisdom tooth.
Your dentist may recommend tooth extraction if you have:
- Severe tooth decay.
- A fractured tooth.
- An impacted tooth.
- Crowded teeth.
- Severe gum disease.
Procedure
Tooth extraction is a dental procedure where a tooth is removed from its socket in the bone. There are two types:
- Simple extraction: The dentist numbs the tooth and gum tissue, loosens the tooth, and removes it with forceps.
- Surgical extraction: For broken or impacted teeth, the dentist makes incisions in your gums to access the tooth.
